Major project of hazardous waste management awarded to Qikiqtaaluk Environmental inc.
Qikiqtaaluk Environmental (QE), a subsidiary of Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (QC), the wholly Inuit owned birthright development corporation of the Baffin region in Nunavut, has been awarded a contract of close to $15M from Defence Construction Canada (DCC). The project scope includes the marine transport, southern transport and disposal of more than 14000 MT of hazardous materials, contaminated soils and PCB waste collected from the environmental clean-up of 7 former DEW Line Sites within the Nunavut Settlement Area.
The DEW Line Clean-Up is an ongoing remediation project undertaken by the Department of National Defence (DND) for the clean-up of 21 military radar stations across Northern Canada. The clean-up project is almost completed, remediation and clean-up is currently underway at 2 sites, Cape Hooper and Cape Dyer.
The project will be executed during the sealift season of 2012-2013. The largest inventory of hazardous waste of the seven DEW line sites included in this contract is located in Cape Dyer on Baffin Island. The cleanup process is still on the way for this site and Qikiqtaaluk Logistics (QL), another division of QC, acts as the main contractor.
The project will involve “Quality Insurance” inspections on each of the DEW lines sites where hazardous waste needs to be removed. These inspections will be performed to insure that waste containers are in good shape for future transport. QE will also verify the compliance of waste handling according to all the regulations for the transport of dangerous goods.
Hazardous waste will be transported to different ports in the south and shipped to several approved treatment facilities according to their category.
The President of Qikiqtaaluk Corporation, Mr. Harry Flaherty is very pleased that this major contract has been awarded to their subsidiary company QE. As he said, “For us, this project meets two important objectives; the removal of dangerous hazardous waste such as PCB’s from sensitive areas that could seriously impact our environment and a project that will confirm QE as the most experienced firm for the management of hazardous waste in the Nunavut.”
Qikiqtaaluk Environmental is a partnership between Qikiqtaaluk Corporation and Sanexen Environmental Services.
