The Qikiqtaaluk Corporation (QC) Board of Directors is pleased to announce its support of the Students on Ice Expedition Program in the amount of $32,500.00 (thirty-two thousand five hundred dollars) for one or more student scholarship’s on the next three Arctic Youth Expeditions from 2013-2015.
Students on Ice Polar Education Foundation (SOI) is an award winning organization dedicated to giving youth from across Canada and around the world powerful educational experiences in both Polar Regions. The organization is deeply committed to promoting polar education, conservation, science, environmental issues and general knowledge about the Polar Regions globally. Their efforts have made Students on Ice an important portal and ambassador for polar and environmental issues.
This year our scholarship was awarded to Rosalie Oqallak from Arctic Bay. Geoff Green, Founder and Executive Director described her experience this year:“Rosalie proved to be an exceptional polar ambassador. Her high energy and positivity was infectious, and she took on the challenge of learning the names of all 135 students and staff members on the expedition! I have no doubt that she will go on to do great things!” She travelled from July 14 to 28, 2013 from Greenland to Nunavut.
“I would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Rosalie on her success earning this scholarship for this educational opportunity and in her future endeavors. It is important for our young people to have these opportunities for growth and to develop leadership skills” said Levi Barnabas, Chairman.
Harry Flaherty, President and CEO, added; “When we were considering a theme for our 30th Anniversary this year, our thoughts turned to the future and the sustainability of the organization. To do that we have to ensure that young people, like Rosalie, have every opportunity to develop the skills needed to govern and ensure a future for Nunavut and our company.”
