Northern Shrimp Research Foundation

Due to the lack of research activities and scientific data in the north, the offshore Licence holders formed the Northern Shrimp Research Foundation (NSRF) under the auspices of the Federal Government to conduct scientific research surveys in the north. Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) provide the scientific advice on sample design and analysis of the data collected.

One project in 2011, led by the foundation, applied a mapping method that utilizes single beam sonar to collect water depth and bottom type data from northern shrimp grounds. The project is to determine whether variations in sonar frequency, classification system parameters, water depth, and sea state can result in a significant difference in the quality of recorded data.
